Appalachian Microscopy and Nanoscience Outreach

Dr. Tonya Coffey

The Hitachi TM 3000 scanning electron microscope can reach magnifications of 30,000X, but only on sturdy, heavy lab tables. The SEM will still work on other tables, but the magnification that can be achieved is reduced. When we visit, we'll need a sturdy table for the microscope and access to power outlets. For a multimedia presentation, we will need internet access and a projector. Sample requests will be honored as much as possible, but we need advance notice to prepare the samples. All samples must be gold coated before imaging in the scanning electron microscope, and foods and liquids are not allowed in this SEM. We will administer a voluntary, anonymous post-test and pre-test to assess student learning and enjoyment of the activity. Before we visit, please send home this letter to the parents. This letter is necessary for IRB certification, giving the parents and students permission to opt out of the activity or the testing.
