Research Interests: My research interests focus on how stream invertebrates (primarily imperlied mollusks and crustaceans) respond to changes in physical and chemical habitat conditions. Ongoing research projects focus on the effects of small impoundments on mussel and crayfish populations, sampling strategies for rare and elusive invertebrates, and freshwater mussel microhabitat use in the Apalachicola and lower Chipola rivers. Addtionally, I am interested in the phylogeny and biogeography of freshwater mollusks and have several ongoing projects examining species boundaries and cyptic biodiversity in unionids. Finally, my students and I recently began a benthic macroinvertebrate and stream habitat monitoring project in the South Fork New River to address changes in landuse and landcover in Watauga County.
