NETS-T Tech Competencies with guiding
questions for teacher ed students
I. TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS.
Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts. Teachers:
A. demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology (as described in the ISTE National Education Technology Standards for Students).
B. demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.
II. PLANNING AND DESIGNING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AND EXPERIENCES.
Note: This section is very similar to III., but these artifacts will show your planning skills.
Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology.
Teachers:
A. design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.
- How does this artifact show you using technology to meet the needs of diverse learners?
B. apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environment and experiences.
- How does this artifact show you using research on teaching a learning with technology? (If you have consulted software reviews or journal articles when planning, these can be used here.)
C. identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability.
- How does this artifact show you locating and evaluating resources?
D. plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities.
- How does this artifact show that you have thought about how you will manage technology resources? (For example, you can use a lesson plan here if it includes notes on how you will get kids to share computers in the context of the lesson.)
E. plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment.
- How does this artifact show you planning to manage student learning? (For example, you can use a lesson plan here if it includes notes on how you will get kids to apply critical thinking as they interact with a particular piece of material.)
III. TEACHING, LEARNING, AND THE CURRICULUM.
Note: This is very similar to II., but these artifacts will show your implementation skills (i.e.. artifacts show you actually doing this work). THIS MUST BE DONE DURING STUDENT TEACHING. IT IS ABOUT APPLYING THESE IDEAS IN THE CLASSROOM.
Teachers implement curriculum plans, that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning.
Teachers:
A. facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.
- How does this artifact help you address curricular standards using technology? (Be explicit about what standards students will be meeting, including both subject specific standards and technology standards.)
- THIS MUST BE DONE DURING STUDENT TEACHING. IT IS ABOUT APPLYING THESE IDEAS IN THE CLASSROOM.
B. use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.
- How does this artifact show you using technology in the context of a constructivist approach (e.g. "learner-centered strategies")?
- THIS MUST BE DONE DURING STUDENT TEACHING. IT IS ABOUT APPLYING THESE IDEAS IN THE CLASSROOM.
C. apply technology to develop students' higher order skills and creativity.
- How does this artifact show you using technology to help students do critical thinking and creative work?
- THIS MUST BE DONE DURING STUDENT TEACHING. IT IS ABOUT APPLYING THESE IDEAS IN THE CLASSROOM.
D. manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.
- How does this artifact show you managing students' use of technology in learning activities?
- THIS MUST BE DONE DURING STUDENT TEACHING. IT IS ABOUT APPLYING THESE IDEAS IN THE CLASSROOM.
IV. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION.
Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies.
Teachers:
A. apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.
- How does this artifact show you using technology to assess kids in a variety of ways? (Using a video of a student reading or e-mailing a student comments on his or her web page work here, as would the use of a computer-based testing program.)
B. use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
- How does this artifact show you collecting data about students and communicating them to others?
C. apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.
- How does this artifact show you evaluating students' use of technology?
V. TEACHERS USE TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE PROFESSIONAL
PRACTICE.
Teachers:
A. use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
- How does this artifact show you using technology to help you learn and develop professionally?
B. continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning.
- How does this artifact show you reflecting on the use of technology in school?
C. apply technology to increase productivity.
- How does this artifact show you using technology to make your job easier? (Computerized grade books often come to mind here, but be careful that the tool doesn't drive the teaching! Better examples might show the ability to organize and modify multiple versions of assignments, save copying time by posting information on the web, etc.)
D. use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning.
- How does this artifact show you using technology to communicate? (E-mail and web pages are natural items here.)
VI. SOCIAL, ETHICAL, LEGAL, AND HUMAN ISSUES.
Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practice.
Teachers:
A. model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.
- How does this artifact show you thinking about copyright issues or child protection? (Permission slip for videotaping or photographing a child work well here, as does evidence you are thinking about fair use of published materials.)
B. apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.
- How does this artifact show you using technology to help a variety of kids take ownership of their learning? ("Empower" is a key word in this competency, as is "diverse.")
C. identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity
- How does this artifact show you that you can find and use technology that supports diversity?
D. promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.
- How does this artifact show that you have thought about safety and health issues related to technology? (This could include a letter home to parents about internet use or TV viewing at home, or it could deal with helping kids recognize positive and negative uses of the media and technology [media literacy]. It could also deal directly with physical health issues when using technology [ergonomics].)
E. facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.
- How does this artifact show you helping ensure that all kids have equal access to technology resources? (This could include plans for the use of adaptive technologies for kids with physical disabilities, examples of computer use rules and sign-up procedures, etc.)
