Lesson Plans
Elementary Reader
(Fourth to Sixth Grade)
Plan |
Evaluation |
Read new chapter(s) in
novel or content book. - Read Chapter 10 (p. 102-110) in Sign of the Beaver (5-1) |
Tom and I read this chapter using the 1 + 1 + 1 method. That is, I started off reading the first page aloud. Tom then read page 2 aloud and page 3 silently. We discussed the story at the end of page 3. Tom's oral reading was choppy with lots of unneeded repetitions, but he did have stretches where he read smoothly. His silent reading was no faster than his oral reading; he must be doing a lot of repetitions when he reads silently too. As always, his comprehension was excellent. |
Reading for Fluency - Two repeated reading trials (3 minutes) on Sign of the Beaver (Chapter 8) |
Tom worked hard on this
repeated reading activity. His times were:
Trial 1 = 102 words per minute Trial 2 = 112 words per minute The 112 wpm was his second fastest time ever, and he was phrasing much better as he read. |
Writing - Brainstorm his next writing topic |
Tom chose to write about Dale Earnhart Jr., his NASCAR driver. He knows a great deal about this topic and should have no trouble getting started with his writing on Wednesday. |
