Libby Childers ’13 majored in Management and began her career with exciting international opportunities.
During her junior year in Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business, she participated in a semester-long study abroad at a university in India. She also gained work experience through an internship with a women’s advocacy non-profit in India.
In her senior year, Childers was accepted into Appalachian’s Holland Fellows Program – an exchange program with Fudan University in China that allows Appalachian students to collaborate with Fudan students to develop and present a professional presentation at a conference in China.
Before Childers left for China, she completed a Human Resource Management internship during the fall of her senior year in order to gain relevant experience for her job search.
“I was incredibly fortunate and privileged to have had the opportunity to study abroad during my time at Appalachian,” Childers said. “I will continue to travel internationally every chance I get.”
Based on her experience and skills, Childers was chosen as one of five Americans to work for Delhaize America in its dream job program. Delhaize is a global food retailer and the company’s U.S. chains Food Lion, Hannaford Bros. and Bottom Dollar.
Childers graduated and began working at regional Food Lion stores, learning how to manage retail. After six months in Winston-Salem, she moved to Belgium to work in the Delhaize corporate office for six months.
During her time in Europe she traveled to Paris, Ireland and Italy, all while training for a management position at Delhaize.
Childers recently returned to the United States to work as a human resources partner for Delhaize. In her position she gives advice and information regarding human resource related issues to company leadership.
Her experience at Appalachian helped her learn how to use her resources to reach her goals.
“I learned how to build a professional network and how to get a job that I love,” Childers said.
