To students considering the Professional Writing (BA) major, Dr. Sarah Beth Hopton says writing is an essential skill in the market place. On virtually every national survey of employers – in fields from engineering to science to business – writing and oral communication rank among the top skills required by prospective employees.
“Most students pick this major because they love to communicate and create. But they also want good job prospects on the other side of graduation,” she said. “They and their parents are often excited – and even a little shocked – at how many career opportunities open up for them.”
Hopton describes writing as a powerful technology in today’s high-tech competitive world:
The Professional Writing major equips students to write and design persuasively for a variety of audiences and contexts using digital tools.
Hopton is new to the Department of English faculty as of Fall 2015. She teaches Introduction to Professional Writing and Business Writing. Her scholarly expertise is in rhetoric.
