GER 3545: German Children's and Adolescent Literature

All of us have grown up listening to or reading fairy tales, and twenty-first century culture has been undeniably influenced by the tales of the Brothers Grimm and their Disney incarnations. This course will address the texts and the legacy of the Grimms but it will also explore the rich corpus of German children�s and youth literature from the late eighteenth century to the present in printed text and in film. After following the chronological development of children�s and youth literature from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries through the twentieth century, we will examine film adaptations of German children�s and youth literature. Finally, we will look at that have sought to address current societal issues in German-speaking cultures; some of these issues include: divided Germany and the Wende, diversity and multiculturalism, environment and climate change.
