Graduate Credit

If you want to take one or more course and have the option to use the courses later in a Spanish or French Graduate Certificate or an MA degree, you should register for graduate credit. You’ll need to:

1. Register for the institute via the Conferences and Institutes Website
2. Apply to the Graduate School (follow the link “Applying to Graduate School”)

You can start registering with Conferences and Institutes right away to save your space, and then take care of the details of your grad school application. But be sure to read the information below so you choose the application option best for you. We have both Graduate Certificate and MA programs in Spanish, and a Graduate Certificate program in French.

Important Graduate Application Information for Summer 2007!
Appalachian is moving to online graduate applications this fall, but for the summer courses you'll still need to complete a paper application. When applying for courses this summer, be sure to use the “Summer 2007” link from the Graduate School application page. This will take you a downloadable form that you will use to complete the mail-in paper application. On the application page you’ll select one of 3 graduate application options; for any of these options, be sure to select the application with "on-campus instructions". The 3 options are:

Non-degree-seeking student. This is the simplest, most straightforward option that requires the least documentation from you up front. You will be required to submit an official transcript from your bachelor’s degree. The advantage: you can try out courses at the institute before deciding to pursue a graduate certificate or a degree. The potential disadvantage: you can only apply six hours of graduate credit earned this way to a Certificate or MA program later on.

Masters student. This is the best option if you know you want to complete an MA at Appalachian. You will be required to submit an official transcript from your bachelor’s degree, official GRE scores, letters of recommendation, and meet all criteria for admission into one of the programs below:

  • MA in Romance Languages-Spanish (Teaching track: K-12 or Community College)
  • MA in Romance Languages-Spanish (Thesis track)
  • MA in Higher Education with a Teaching Concentration in French*
  • MA in Higher Education with a Teaching Concentration in TESL*

*Both Higher Ed programs are housed in the College of Education

Graduate Certificate student. If you want to begin one of our new 18-hour  Graduate Certificates (which officially start Fall 2007),  you can apply one or both Summer 2007 courses to your program of study. You will be required to submit an official transcript from your bachelor’s degree and meet all criteria for admission into the certificate program. We offer two Graduate Certificate options:

  • Graduate Certificate in French  (18 hours)
  • Graduate Certificate in Spanish  (18 hours)

If you are interested in the Graduate Certificate programs you should apply now, using the Summer 2007 link on the Graduate School application page, as a non-degree-seeking student. This will get you enrolled in the summer institute. Help us keep track of you by also at least starting your official, online application so you’re on file when the program “officially” opens in Fall 2007. The French certificate application is already available; the Spanish certificate application will be available around May 30. To start the graduate certificate application, use the Fall 2007 and 2008 link on the Graduate School application page.

For Graduate Certificate Students: Important!
Before you mail your application to the graduate school, write at the top “I intend to apply Summer 2007 courses to a graduate certificate in French (or Spanish).” You will still be required to formally apply for the certificate program using the online application later on, but you will not be charged a second application fee.
