Beginning Reader

(Early to Mid First Grade)

Plan

Evaluation

Reread three books.

- Father Bear Goes Fishing (Level 4)

- Mr. Grump (Level 4)

- Seagull is Clever (Level 4)

Rebecca read the first two books with very few errors.  We had to echo read the first two pages of the third book, Seagull, but he did a good job from then on.  He self-corrected on two words.
Word Sort

Word Families:  hit, big, win

Today was only our second day with these short i word families.  Rebecca could place them in the right column, but she had difficulty reading several of the words (tin, fig, bit).
Write a sentence. Rebecca quickly came up with a sentence today.

We are going to gt a nu pope

I helped her spell are and going, but she did the rest.  She is getting better at sounding out the words.

Introduce a new book. Blackberries was our first Level 5 book, but it had the Bear family with which Rebecca is familiar.  After echo reading just the first page, Rebecca was able to read fairly independently.  I read one page in the middle to give her a break, but she really wanted to do all the reading.  This tells me Rebecca can work at Level 5.

- Blackberries (Level 5)

Read a book to Rebecca.

- Make Way for Ducklings

Rebecca loves this book; we will finish it on Wednesday.
