Typography in Motion

Iota typeface and animated type specimen, 2022.

A first experience with building modular typefaces, I remember this project for Typography II was particularly challenging due to the fact that I had never built a typeface before, and I had also applied the pressure on top of myself to practice something I've never done before: create an animation in Adobe After effects.

Iota is a simple geometric sans-serif font that I created using fontstruct in early January 2022. As I hadn't made typefaces in the past, the project of coming up with a complete unique font with the limited forms of modular fonts made the process quite difficult. Once a typeface had been made and solidifed, I found that the real challenge came from coming up with a type specimen format, and how I would display my font.

While it was easy enough to make a type specimen poster, Typography II took it the extra mile to have us produce our own physical typefaces in different formats. Thinking about the origins of my typeface as inspired by retro-video game typefaces that had to be simplistic, the idea to have a scrolling screen later came into place: this later became an idea to create my own animation for my font, which would later be transcribed into a flipbook.

Learning a new skill isn't always easy; and the continued elements of naivity seems to follow this project. I had never worked with modular fonts or animation, so the animated typeface is a source of pride for me, and I hope to continue creating animated typefaces in this manner, with more sophistication.
