Dear Mrs. S.,

I am reading Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. It is a

book about a journey that Sal, a young Native American girl,

takes with her grandparents. They go in search of her mother. You do not know for a long time that her mother is actually dead. I thought that they would actually get to see and talk to her until I was almost through the book.. The book also includes a story within a story. Sal tells her grandparents the crazy caper of Phoebe, the lunatic, and others.

Sal and I are alike in several ways. The first way is that she and I both moved when we were in middle school. She moved from Kentucky to Ohio while I moved from Tokyo, Japan to Boone, NC. I felt angry like Sal when I first moved. I also once had a friend like Phoebe. Her name was Amy, and she was always making up crazy stories like Phoebe. Once she even thought my cat was magical when he escaped from the vet's office and showed up at our house 3 days later. Sal is unlike me in several ways as well. She is Native American while I am from Irish and German ancestry. She also lost her mother at age 13. My mother is still alive. I am not sure how I would feel if something happened to my mother. Sal must feel abandoned. Finally, I think that Sal is lucky to have two sets of grandparents.

I only have one grandmother who we call Nana. I love her dearly and we share lots of interests like books and writing. My grandmother LOVES to tell and hear interesting stories just like Sal's grandparents!

Sincerely,

Sara Student
