Writing Folders

Total Time: 20 minutes

Purpose:

This lesson is best used when developing guidelines for writing workshop and class organization.

Introduction: 5 minutes

Today we are going to assemble our Writing Folders. These writing folders are designed for you to keep up with your writings, works in progress and important information. By keeping a Writing Folder, you will be able to see your growth as a writer. These folders will contain information you will need in order to use and understand effective editing strategies for your writings. It is important that you see the importance of writing. Through these writing folders you will be able to physically see your growth and mark the importance of writing in your personal lives.

Materials Needed:

Each student will be given a three ring binder 1 ˝” and start with 10 divider tabs.

Exercise: 10-15 minutes

I would like for each of you to take out your writing folders and divider tabs. I want you to place your divider tabs inside your writing folder. These writing folders will be staying in the classroom. You can only take your writing folder home with permission. Each folder should be accounted for at the end of each day. (On over head projector, display the organized list of contents that should be labeled on specific divider tabs in the students writing folders).  I would like for each of you to take a look at the content that should be contained in your Writing Folders. There may be other sections added as we proceed through writing workshop, but for now these are the ones you should make note of. The first division will consist of a Conference Check-In sheet. The check in sheet will be used during conferences with the teacher so that the student and teacher can keep up with the students’ progress and conference time throughout the year. The second division will be labeled for writings in progress. This section will also be important during Conference time. The writings that are filed here are to be worked on during specified times throughout the class period. The third section will be designed for finished works. These writings will go through a series of conferences, editing and revision before entering the finished works section of the writing folder. The fourth section will be reserved for helpful hints notes. These ideas and procedures will be provided by the teacher throughout the year. These handouts will provide students with information that will be helpful while completing their assignments. The fifth section of the Writing Folder will be for “Free Write Friday” writings. Students will also be given the opportunity to share their works with their peers. Students will be given the chance to add sections to their writing folders for their benefit. One of these may be a special place for their favorite works done by their fellow classmates.
