Appalachian Microscopy and Nanoscience Outreach

Dr. Tonya Coffey

The Hitachi TM 3000 scanning electron microscope is very easy to use, with touch screen operation. Students are able to focus, move the samples, and change the magnification of the images themselves. Click here to see a video of my 8 year old son using it to examine tulip pollen. We can also bring interesting physics demos that explain how the microscopes work, if interested. In addition to the electron microscope, we can bring optical microscopes of varying magnification, so that students can get a sense of the various length scales viewed by different microscopes, and also better understand the difference between optical imaging and electron imaging. I have also designed some hands-on activities for students that actively introduce students to a sense of different length scales.
