Introduction - Have you ever wished you were in charge of your family vacations? Well, here's your chance. Since you have just completed a thorough study of our state, North Carolina, you and your family are going to take a ten day vacation exploring the state, from Murphy to Manteo.

Task - Working in groups of three,
you must plan a vacation itinerary for a ten day period, staying entirely
in North Carolina. This should include the estimated cost of the
trip (including food, accommodations, and admission prices, etc.), a timeline
of the trip, a map of scheduled stops, driving directions, and a description
of each anticipated stop.
You will then present your itinerary
to your family. You will use a large cutout of NC to show locations of
attractions indicated in sequential order marked by an appropriate image
from the site. You will also highlight your route on a NC road map. You
will complete a bar graph to illustrate total amount needed for lodging,
food, and attractions.

Process - Within your group, each person must complete a specific job. You may switch jobs daily if you wish or keep the same job throughout the duration of the project. Because this is a group project, remember that the responsibility of the group's grade is with all members. It is very important that you perform your job to the best of your ability. If you have trouble, ask someone in your group for assistance.
Use the following guidelines when
planning the trip:
1. You must stop at least
once in each region of North Carolina.
2. You must stay within the
budget. ($3,000)
3. You may include any stops
you like, but must include at least one historical attraction, one living
history museum, one cultural event, and one National Park. You may
visit any other sites as well, but these four must be included.
4. Your itinerary must include
round trip directions, meaning you need to end up back at home.
Job 1 - Travel Agent - Your job is to find important information about the places you will be visiting. Remember to include the required types of attractions and be sure your trip includes stops in each region. You will be responsible for giving admission price information to the accountant. You will be responsible for the description of each stop. Use Microsoft Works word processor to record information about places you are visiting.
Job 2 - Navigator- Your job is to use map web sites and plan your route to the destinations, record major highways, and estimated total mileage from place to place. Be sure to arrange the trip itinerary in a logical, sequential order. (For example, it would be unwise to visit Cape Hatteras, then Cherokee, then the Wright Brother's Memorial in that order.) You are responsible for preparing the map of stops and writing driving directions using major highways.
Job 3 - Accountant - You need to locate hotels or motels
within a few miles of your destination and how much that will cost.
(For hotel/motel rates, assume you have a family of four...2 adults and
2 children.) You must also include the following estimates for food
daily: Breakfast $15, Lunch $25, Supper $40. You will be responsible
for the itinerary of the trip along with the amount spent daily and the
grand total. The itinerary should be completed using Microsoft Works Spreadsheet
Travel Checklists.
