Appalachian State University is a comprehensive university, founded in 1899 as Watauga Academy, a teacher training school for the people of western North Carolina. Through the years, the university has continued to educate students in North Carolina, but has expanded it's focus on education to include 95 undergraduate degree programs as well as provide quality education to students from all over the United States and throughout the world. Appalachian has gained a place on the list of outstanding comprehensive universities annually identified by such publications as U.S. News & World Report but also was named Time Magazine’s College of the Year in 2001.

Holland Fellows Program In it's tenth year, the Holland Fellows Program at Appalachian State University brings Fudan and ASU undergraduate and graduate students together to complete a research project and gain insight on each other's culture

Faculty Exchanges in China Dr. Jerry Fox, Associate Management Professor in ASU's Walker College of Business, teaches at Fudan University in the MIT/Fudan IMBA Program
