A Short History
Fudan University was established in 1905, initially named Fudan Public School. Its name “Fudan“ was taken from a famous line in the Confucian Classic The Book of History: “Brilliant are the sunshine and moonlight, again the morning glory after a night“.
Fudan University is a comprehensive university. It comprises 17 full-time schools, 69 departments, 73 bachelor's degree programs, 22 disciplines and 134 sub-disciplines authorized to confer Ph. D. degrees, 201 master degree programs, 6 professional degree programs, 7 Key Social Science Research Centers of Ministry of Education P.R.C., 9 National Basic Science Research and Training Institutes and 25 post-doctoral research stations. It has 40 national key disciplines granted by the Ministry of Education P.R.C., nationally third. At present, it compasses 77 research institutes, 112 cross-disciplinary research institutes and 5 national key laboratories.
Now, Fudan University enrolls over 45,000, including full-time students and students in Continuing Education and Online Education. Also, there“re as many as 2,400 students from overseas, second highest in the nation next to Beijing Language and Culture University.
Fudan University owns a high-level research faculty of over 2,400 full-time teachers and researchers, including 1,350 professors and associate professors, 24 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Also, Fudan University has 8 teaching hospitals, integrating medical service, medicine education and research.
Fudan University's main objective is to cultivate all-round talents. Basing on its practical condition, it draws a lot of successful experience from other universities in home and abroad and puts emphasis on integration, cross and combination of different principals to exert the feature and advantage of complex university. With long-term practice and exploration, it has set up a complete and distinguished education program and management system.

Fudan University comprises 17 full-time schools (including 66 specialties) and 4 departments. We have 68 specialties for Bachelor's Degree Candidates, 209 specialties for Master's Degree Candidates and 157 specialties for Doctoral Degree Candidates.
Students:
Now, Fudan University has nearly 44,300 students, including full-time students, students in Continuing Education or Network Education, as well as overseas students.
Faculty:
Fudan University owns a high-level research faculty of over 2,300 full-time teachers and researchers, including 1,350 professors and associate professors, 25 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, nearly 746 doctoral supervisors, 32 Special professors and 8 lecture professors of "Changjiang Scholars Program", 6 principal scientists of "973" program and 31 “Yong Experts with Prominent Contributions”. Also, Fudan University has nine hospitals, such as Zhongshan Hospital and Huashan Hospital, where students can have practices of medical service, medicine education and research.
Objectives:
Fudan University aims to cultivate prominent talents. While examing the successful experiences of other universities both at home and abroad, Fudan focused on the interactions among different specialties and formed a complete and sound teaching and management system.

Foreign Affairs OfficeFudan University's Foreign Affairs Office is a section responsible for university issues relating to foreign affairs. It is designated to carry out national foreign policies and educational policies in relation to foreign affairs. This office bears double duty of strictly following foreign policies and foreign affairs management. Specifically, the FAO is trusted to manage, guide, coordinate, and provide service for any foreign-related work at the unviersity. |
Foreign Students Office In order to adapt to the international strategic development requirements of Fudan University, to increase the development of foreign students education, Fudan University set up Foreign Students Office in November 2003. This Office is responsible for making policies for the management of all foreign students at Fudan University and coordinating the work. There is an Admissions Department, Students Affairs Department and Administrative Department within Foreign Students Office. |
International Cultural Exchange School The International Cultural Exchange School specializes in teaching Chinese to foreign students. It is one of the four main institutions for teaching Chinese as a foreign language in China.
ICES accepts long-term students, short-term students, advanced Chinese learners, BA and MA candidates.

Fudan signs MOU with the UNC System On October 11, 2004, the University of North Carolina signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Fudan University in China to establish and conduct mutually agreed upon cooperative and collaborative projects, programs, and activities. |
