Advising

Our graduate faculty shares advising duties. You are assigned an advisor based on the year in which your formally begin the MA. If you are uncertain who is serving as your advisor, please contact the program director, Beverly Moser.

Meeting with your Advisor:
Please keep in touch with your advisor, and contact him or her if you have questions about your progress or any concerns about your program. You can handle some basic questions via e-mail, but you should also plan to meet your advisor face-to-face on campus, too, to plan out your program of study and get feedback on your development in French or Spanish.

Especially good dates to meet with advisors are federal holidays that are not observed at Appalachian (Veteran’s Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day) and during most public school Spring Break periods in April. If you work during they day, faculty advisors can be available late in the afternoon if you make an appointment in advance. Consider combining a meeting with your advisor with a visit to the University Library.

Important Materials for Degree Candidates:
We have developed some advising handouts and links to help you get the most out of your graduate study.

Step-to-step advice for completing your degree. This document describes the various stages of your graduate study, including your program of study, admission to candidacy, application for graduation, etc.

Detailed guidelines for MA comprehensive examinations. This handout tells you how to begin collecting material to prepare for your oral comprehensive exams, beginning with your first class in the program. Please refer to these guidelines often, and begin thinking early in your studies about the material you will develop and include.

The Graduate School maintains a link with all essential forms you will need, including the program of study, admission to candidacy, program change forms, and application for graduation.

Other Important Forms for Degree Candidates:
If you have taken a fall or spring semester off and are returning to graduate study, you must complete a data sheet and fax it to the Registrar’s Office at (828) 262-3136 before you can register for classes.

If you are in the K-12 teaching track and need to take a Curriculum and Instruction course out of sequence (in a semester other than Summer 1), you must complete a petition to join an existing cohort elsewhere and e-mail it to our Distance Education Program Specialist, Ms. Peri David, davidwp@appstate.edu.

If you are in the Community College teaching track and need to find a Higher Education elective available off-campus via distance education, you must also complete a petition to join an existing cohort elsewhere and e-mail it to our Distance Education Program Specialist, Ms. Peri David, davidwp@appstate.edu.
