For MA Candidates in French, we offer part-time study off-campus (Hickory) fall and spring, and an on-campus Summer Institute in July. Click here for infomation on scheduling.

MA Candidates in Spanish can study part-time off campus (Hickory) or full-time on campus in Boone, with an on-campus Summer Institute in July. Click here for infomation on scheduling.

Fall and Spring classes are scheduled weekly in the evenings (5:00-7:30 p.m.), in an online/hybrid format. In the Fall and Spring, 10 course sessions are delivered entirely online, and 5 course sessions (approximately one every three weeks) meet at our distance-education facility in Hickory, directly off I-40. This combination of online and face-to-face meetings allows us to offer an interactive, high-quality program to students who are teaching or pursuing other employment during the day.

Overview of Program

Courses are distributed in three areas:

  1. All students take two required FL courses that are offered in alternate years:
    • Fall, even years: FL 5601, Bilingualism and Second Language Acquisition
    • Fall, odd years: FL 5590, Issues in Teaching Foreign Languages and Cultures
  2. K-12 candidates also take the Product of Learning (FL 5525), a course which helps them structure the final project required for the degree.

  3. All students take two professional education courses instructed by Appalachian’s Reich College of Education.

K-12 teachers take two courses focused on children and schools:

    • Advanced Topics in Diversity
    • Teacher Leadership and School Improvement

Community College candidates select two courses on working with adults, such as:

    • The Adult Learner
    • The Community College

  4. All remaining coursework for the MA are “elective” courses.

K-12 teachers take 7 electives; Community College candidates take 8 electives.

These electives are rotated through the program in fall, spring and summer. Read a list of common French and Spanish graduate courses.
